http://nonniesquiltingdreams.podbean.com/

This podcast is mine it is totally irregular uploading of episodes since I work as a full time nurse and when I come home from work I am totally tired. To be honest I have not gotten very far in my FINISHES this year. I love quilting and try to keep working on my projects… but it is slow going. I do blog and podcast about the the quilt books, notions and newest techniques I buy.

I have been very bad at podcasting this past year…. I hope to do better… that said I am not removing my link.

Frances is a children’s book author who has taken up quilting in the past 8 years. She is a dedicated finisher and takes you along on her journey. I loved listening to her podcast over the last 5 years as she progressed from a newbie with a new to her sewing machine to an accomplished quilter. This past year Frances has started writing QUILT related books and quilts to relate to her books.  She entered two quilts in QUILT CON.  Recently she has been designing her own quilts both for her books and because THAT IS THE WAY SHE ROLLS.

pat-sloan-big

I first saw Pat when she presented her trunk show soon after I was introduced to quilting back in 2005. To think of it I think she was the first national teacher I had been exposed to. Pat was also the first podcast I use to listen to when I learned about podcasting in 2010. ( Remember I am not of the computer generation that learns how to use a computer in grade school. Computers had not even been invented when I went to school.) Pat currently works with American Patchwork and Quilting magazine but she had been podcasting for several years before she affiliated with them. Pat has been in the quilting business for years and has interviewed many of the nationally known quilting divas. She always have interesting guest to listen to. Pat publishes weekly so you can count on her when you want to listen to podcast while working on a project she always has something quilty to listen to.

BLOCK BY MANY NAMES

ROSE DREAM

ENDLESS CHAIN

BROKEN SQUARE

TRUE LOVER’s KNOT

LOVER’s KNOT

LOVER’s BOWTIE

BARBARA BRACKMAN ENCYCLOPEDIA   pages 198-199, block #1532

A confession, I have never been able to sew a curved block to save my soul.  I decided to do something about that lack in my quilting education.   I signed up for a class at my favorite local quilt shop, SEW CRAZY IN LAPEER.   The class was taught by my friend Mary.  She is a talented, prolific quilter, who makes beautiful quilts.   She was an excellent teacher who was able to explain and demonstrate the steps so they were easily understood and accomplished.  She also gave us tips (learned from her making quilts using these same blocks) to make the cutting, piecing and pressing easier.  Since I have never been successful with sewing curved blocks before I found the tips helpful for my success.

The cutting of the patches took time and patience.   I think if I make this quilt, I will want to track down templates for this block.   I have contacted John Flynn’s company to see if they have laser cut acrylic templates.  Another method of getting this block made is to make a print out on a full sheet sticker of the block patterns.  I will then take it to my local glass guy and they will cut them for me.  I have done this in the past when I could not find templates on line.  If you ever go this route make sure your print outs are accurate as some printers skew objects in a print out.

I found the hardest part of assembling the entire block was deciding how to press the patches so they will nest when you butt the seams together.  I found it very easy to get my seams flipped so the block did not lie flat.  I started out pressing the seam allowances to the dark but then the other seams in the block would not align properly when I started sewing the patches together.  I am going to have to make more blocks before I can decide if there is a consistent and accurate method to press the seams.

This is going to be a LONG -TERM project.  Once I get my templates I will cut out blocks in groups of ten from my red and white stash fabrics.  I am not planning to be over concern with being matchy with the whites or the red fabrics.  I love the red and white quilts I saw in the book RED AND WHITE QUILTS: INFINITE VARIETY   but I have no intention of buying new fabrics.  I am going to use what I have from my stash and hopefully it will be a more meaningful quilt.

If you are interested in making a similar style quilt I found instructions for the block and a free pattern at, QUILT in a Day.

An evening with Laura Patterson from Bay City Michigan.

LAURA PATTERSON from Bay City came to our guild and gave a trunk show of her past quilting projects.  Her quilts were featured in the Bay City Heritage Quilt Show.  A group of the guild members met her at Lucky’s Restaurant in Davison.   The dinner conversation was lively getting to know each other.  It was more like a reunion of college friends, trading life stories and a lively discussion about various quilts, and quilt shows.  After dinner we went to the Senior Center where we helped her set up for the trunk show.

During the trunk show she explained how she made many of her remarkable quilts.  I was in awe of the two quilts her first quilts as she  used JENNY BEYER’s  hand piecing technique a tessellation quilt.  She also hand quilted the top.  .Laura  gave a brief demonstration of how to hand piece, how to use ultra-suede to make SKINNY applique motifs. and how to embroider and using beading on organza to make your own applique. Laura stated that hand piecing was faster for her then machine  works as she pieces when goes on trips, waits for appointments or watches TV.  She said she is rarely without a project.

All of her quilts were gorgeous and detailed.  Absolutely stunning eye candy.  I am posting just a few of the many pictures I took of her quilts.  I took over 45 pictures and would have taken more but my battery died.

Making progress … UFO CHECK IN

LOST TRIANGLES … NOW FOUND

This is my current quilt in progress…. the fabrics for this quilt was donated and I am selecting fabric from my stash.  I made triangles measuring 6.5 inch from the donation and stash fabric.  I am putting the patches on the wall then sewing them as I go along.  I will be posting more pictures as this quilt evolves…. Trying to decide if the middle yellow square in the middle of the quilt or off center …. probably off center because it is easier to construct on the design wall.

I have joined DARLA’S MARCH QUILT ALONG over on Scientific Quilter’s blog.  I have been sewing 15 minutes a day … that usually become several hours worth.  I think I have my mojo back…..

BOOK REVIEW: MAJOR EYE CANDY: RED and WHITE QUILTS, INFINITE VARIETY

I am so behind.  I became vice president and program coordinator for our quilt guild and have been having fun contacting speakers to set up guild lectures and workshops.   I have also been increasing the blogging on our guild blog.  Down side, is it ate up a lot of time so I have not been blogging her much.  Upside, is I will be duplicating some of the post here….. as sooooooon as I get organized.

I also have been spending a lot of my time dreaming about the quilts in this book.   The quilts in this book  are estimated to be from the 1880s to the 1920 and were shown in an exhibit in New York City.   One that I missed a change to go to because I was still working and could not get the time off to go when my friends went….. BUMMER  !!!

https://www.amazon.com/Red-White-Quilts-Infinite-Presented/dp/0847846520

LINK TO AMAZON….. and NO I am not an affiliate

I love this book and rate it 10/5 …. It is so worth the money I spent for this picture/ coffee table book…. no patterns but lots of pictures.

I have taken it to bed with me every night so I can dream of all the lovely quilts that could be made.  I am seriously thinking of making a red and white quilt for myself but I am having trouble picking out one pattern that I want to make.  Many of the patterns I have seen before but a few are new to me.  I want to make them all.

The book has over 350 pages of quilts, 4 quilts to a page.  The collection consisted of over 650 quilts. The names of the patterns and what information they have about the quilts are listed.  For most of the quilts they are  undated and the maker is unknown.  There were several forwards written for the book including one by Martha Stewart.  My favorite forward was written by the owner of the quilt,  Joanna Rose.

If you belong to a guild this is an excellent book to add to your guild library so you can share with all the members….. AND no I am not going to donate this book to my guild.

Well I have to run as I have babysitting duties calling to me and I do not have enough words to praise this book.

HAPPY QUILTING,

KEEP IN TOUCH,

NONNIE

What I learned while making this quilt ….

MQ with StyleI was inspired to make this quilt by the quilt I saw in  CHRISTA WATSON’s book MACHINE QUILTING with STYLE. (page 34)  I really liked Christa’s pattern other than it was too small.  I wanted a queen size quilt of at least 100 inches wide and 100 inches length.   Christa’s quilt was more like a throw size.   So I  decided to make my own quilt inspired by Christa but as usual doing my own way.

I am listing here what I learned while making this quilt because as usual when I go off on my own I usually run into trouble.

1.   The first thing that made it hard on me was letting my DD see the quilt I was making for her.  I had planned a rainbow quilt but she decided she would rather have a blue and green quilt.  I abandoned the  segments I had already made, putting them aside and instead made other segments. …. What I learned is ……  DO NOT show quilts in progress if you do not want input from someone else.

2.     I usually design on a design wall as I like to design visually.  Only problem is I do not have a design wall big enough to stretch out the segments  far enough to measure the quilt top properly.  I mis- measured  the quilt top multiple times and thus wasted some fabric.  I was also short and had to reorder more fabric.  Of course,  it was not the exact right shade because it was a different lot number.   I can tell the difference but my DD can not …. SO I AM SAFE.  MODERN QUILTS often require more background fabric than traditional quilts.  I had purchased 10 yards of KONA JET BLACK from a local quilt shop ( it was the last of the bolt)  I had to order an extra 3 yards on line.

Second thing,  I could have done to avoid this problem is to draft out a pattern of the quilt and estimate the size of segments I needed.  MEASURE TWICE CUT ONCE.    I made the pattern below midway thru the project.  I would have saved myself a lot of aggravation if I had drafted it earlier. ….  like before I started the quilt top.

My pattern for my quilt

IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO SOME BASIC PLANNING BEFORE STARTING ON A QUILT.  I TEND TO SKIP THIS STEP ….. BUT NOT IN THE FUTURE.

3.   In Christa’s quilt she used a pre cut 2-1/2 inch strips for the background and the colored strips.  Her quilt was 54 x62 inches.  She used a roll of background fabric paired with a roll of colored pre cuts.  I would have had to used 2 – 3 or more rolls of 2-1/2 inch back ground fabric and another 2 rolls of the colored fabric. ( I estimated 7 segments of 10 strips each. )

My segments were made from a bin of strips I had cut in various widths for a different quilt.  I pulled all the greens, blues and yellows that suited the project.  I had left overs from a set of batik  TONGA TREATS, and I used many of those in the quilt.

Because the strips were of different widths I had trouble making a matching segment to mirror the first segment.  The left hand segment should match the segment on the right side.  It would have been easier if I had used precuts.  I had to fudge with the segments to get them to the correct side.  The next time I make this quilt quilt.  I am going to echo the sizes of the strips on each segment.   I need to pre plan the segments more carefully.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO BALANCE AND MIRROR THE LEFT SEGMENT TO THE RIGHT SEGMENT.  IT RESULTS IN A NICE PATTERN.   THE NEXT QUILT I MAKE WILL HAVE TWO CENTERED SEGMENTS and NONE OF THE HALF SEGMENTS SEEN AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE QUILT TOP.

top half of the quilt

This quilt is so large I can not hang it anywhere to take a picture of the entire quilt.  The picture above is the top half of the quilt.   The picture below is part of the bottom segment.  I had not finished piecing the bottom segment that went below the segments shown here.   I am going to borrow a quilt rack to see if I can get a better picture.                                   .

bottom half of the quilt

4.  I had used a batting as my design wall when I was planning this quilt.  It was white and shedded like crazy.  As a result I have hundreds of tiny fuzz all over the quilt.  I am spending a lot of time trying to clean the quilt top before taking it to the long armer.  I am having my long armer order black batting for this quilt.  Once it is clean it is off to the long armer for quilting.

THE IMPORTANT LESSON HERE IS DO NOT USE A WHITE BATTING WITH A BLACK QUILT.

I do plan to post a better picture of the quilt…. the entire quilt top ….. IF I CAN GET ONE.

GETTING BACK TO BUSINESS….

This past year has been rough …. but I have decided to make things better I must actually do something  CONSTRUCTIVE about it.  So I am going to working on my weight and health,  try and improve my mood by getting back to the things I love…. quilting, blogging and podcasting.

First thing …. evaluate my UFOs …. see what they need and get going on them.  I have to know where I have been before I can decide where to go and what to do next.

I also have to decide what stops me from doing what I want and   “destroying”  whatever is blocking my goals  ….. For example,  I often say I need to clean the sewing area, the room, the house before I get started.  Since I hate house cleaning I put it off for as long as I could till the day was gone.   In the past I have found that if I jump into the quilting project I get energized for other things and then cleaning is not as much of a “chore” and I actually get around to doing it.  Win-Win for me… I spend time doing the things I love and then actually have the energy and interest to do  chores during or after my crafting time.  ( I am always surprised at how much laundry I get washed and put away during my quilting time. After all I have to free up the washing machine to pre-wash fabric. )

I am going to stop blathering now and get to the point of this post.  I am listing my shameful list of UFOs.  Many of these projects I have blogged about before so they will look old to you.  I start many project because I get intrigued by a technique or a pattern that I want to try.  I get started then I stop because something happens in life or I hit a roadblock in my quilting or I have lost interest in the project.  This year my goal is to finish my UFOs.

HERE is my incomplete list of projects   ….

ANNIE SMITH was the first quilting podcaster. She published over 100 podcasts when life through her a curve and she had to slow down in her posting new episode. I liked her podcast because she interviewed quilters on the west coast as she is based in California. Annie is teacher and quilt judge so you always garnered helpful hints from her episode. My favorite episodes of hers is the discussion of entering quilt shows. I have only touched on a few of the topics she discusses I always learn something from her she is well worth the LISTEN.

My first assignment for my retirement is ……

I am thinking of retiring this year and already I am getting assignments . . . My assignment if I choose to accept …. make three    (?) quilts to be used as window shades . . . (to block light) for daughter’s pre-school class room. She raided my fabric stash to find my hoard of fabric I was saving for something… I guess this is it. She has since gone on line to buy more fabrics … We will be adding some bright solids / tone on tone to get enough yardage … not sure how yet.

I am thinking I will using the people panel on the top and bottom of the shade. The small blocks and the larger animals will be fussy cut then framed. I will be using the stripe fabric as some of the frames. I will also use solid fabric and tone on tone in bright fabrics from my stash to make the frames.

I am thinking of splitting the sun, branch and caterpillar fabric and framing it with the bubble fabric on the other picture. I will put them at the top and bottom of the shade.  I will center the main panel….  using the food and butterfly fabric around it to get it to size.  If I need more blocks I will do raw edge applique of the caterpillar and butterfly… maybe some food.                 .

Not sure what I will do with these fabrics … They are on hold.  Looking for more book related fabric that is appropriate for the project.  I have Dr Suess fabric but I was saving it for a special grandchild…. so we will see.

THIS quilt has gone to my niece, Kristi,  and her great husband David.  I am just going to post pictures as I have posted in progress pictures in the past.  I will say the quilt pattern was inspired by FOCUS POCUS by Swirly Girl Designs.  ( BEWARE of really big pictures because I am so proud of this quilt.)

FABRIC from my stash
Black KONA
BLACK and GOLD Border Fabric
I started this quilt in the fall of 2014. I initially found the pattern in a quilt in a quilt show or at a guild meeting. To be honest I do not remember where I saw the quilt but I had taken a picture of it. I tried finding the pattern but did not find anything until months later I found the PINTEREST BOARD dedicated to FOCUS POCUS PATTERN after I started my own quilt. There I found 100s of patterns for Focus Pocus and links to the Swirly Girl Designs web page on Pinterest.

Finding the pattern, my girl friend and I ordered the pattern but it was too late for me. I had already started on my quilt several months before. I had drafted the pattern in EQ7. I had figured out I wanted the focus fabrics to use 14 inches square. Using fat quarters from my stash I was able to cut the center and the four side pieces from the fat quarters. Some of the fabrics were directional but I was able to cut the side patches with that in mind. None of the fabrics are identical but I have several of similar style and print. I tried to balance the fabrics on my design wall.

I later designed the B BLOCK once again using EQ7. Each block had a center of gold once again from my stash. Each patch was of a different fabric with no repeats. Kona Black was used for the side patches that created the illusion of a larger block.

The border was 4 yards of a fabric I fell in love with years ago and had been saving. This was the perfect quilt to use it. I cut the binding off and set it aside for later use. I left the rest of the fabric alone planning to cut the borders after I had pieced the quilt top and knew the size I wanted it to be. I aimed for 100 x100 with the knowledge that the quilt top like all my quilts would grow in size and take on a life of its own.

WORD of the Year …. Non Resolutions …for 2016

I do not believe in making resolutions for the NEW YEAR…. why because I never stick to them.  What I do do is make lists …. Priorities change on that list some rise high then some drop really low…. to the point of non existence.  I will be posting my UFO and list of dreams at the end of this post.

I also think not making resolutions comes from being different aspects of our life cycles.  I am having more surgery soon.  I am looking forward to retirement.  I realize it is not a time when I can make a lot of resolutions and plans that I will feel bad about because I can not accomplish them.  I do not want to set myself up for failure as that could lead to depression.  My energy is going to be in getting better after the surgery.  Beyond that anything I accomplish in the next year is gravy.

Sandy’s Quilting for the Rest of Us RESOLUTIONS & WORD of the Year

I have participated in SANDY of Quilting for the Rest of Us …. New Years Resolution and Word of the Year blog post  for the past several years.  The first year I just posted my UFO list, last year I stated I had no resolutions (my memory could be off on this.)  I did have a WORD of  the YEAR.   Last years word was FINISH … Can you see the on going theme here…. I tend to start projects in fits and starts then feel guilty when I do not finish them…. but my quilter A.D.D. kicks in and I find a new project is more fun then what I am working on.   I had some success in FINISH but then a lot of failures too.   Adding more UFOs then what I finished…. but enough of my failures … let us look forward to the next year …. 2016.

This years Word of the Year for 2016 is HEAL.   First off I had surgery and will have a second surgery next month.  I learned with the first surgery I have a lot of physical therapy  to do in order to heal.  I have other healing to do …. spiritually and mentally.  I will not go into the details because I hate when I read blogs that spew the disappointments in life …. I think some things should be kept private.

I am giving myself a pass in the future if I do not complete any of the UFOs this year because my priorities will be HEALING.  So sorry there is no resolutions to be found here… I will have a list posted of my UFOs I want to finish but if they do not get finished oh well …. some of these will be repeats of previous UFO list.

2016 UFO list … with details:

1.  Niece ‘s Quilt

…. just have to sew down the binding … but if not finished by this years holiday party for the family it will not get done for a long while….. My record is not putting binding on a finished quilt for 4 years.

LINK to pictures of the quilts I am talking about

2.  Sew binding on TIGER QUILT

3.  Finish FMQing on give away NURSE QUILT … and bind

4.  Finish FMQing on RED SETH QUILT … and bind … by machine

5.  TIMBO’s black and white and red all over … needs FMQing

6.  My retirement nurse quilt …. needs FMQing

7.  SKYWARD NINE PATCH QUILT …. finish blocks… assemble

8.  Finish Hayden Quilt and think about something simple for her baby brother.

9.  Nephew’s  Quilt …. need to plan, design and start … not a UFO but it is something I want to do.

10.  LOOK in the basement quilt storage and pull out all the other UFOs that are down there… dig for GOLD in my RETIREMENT STASH.  This is the end of the list I could add more but I do not want to be unrealistic.

Please join Sandy’s Quilting for the Rest of US …. RESOLUTIONS post and inspire the rest of us.

TREASURE TROVE of …. HOW TO ENTER A QUILT SHOW BLOGS

I have been absent from both blogging and podcasting as I had surgery last month.   I did a lot of surfing thru the web reading quilting blogs from my FEEDLY list.  I also spent a lot of time doing physical therapy but very little sewing.  Actually my sewing room was demolished and my sewing machine packed away as we need the room for other things.

In the past I have verbalized that I wanted to enter a quilt show with one of my quilts.  I recently found a blog that lead me to other blogs about judging in quilt shows, entering quilt shows and being rejected.    I thought I would share them with you as I found them very interesting.

FREE MOTION QUILTING REPORT – – 9-20-2015

FREE MOTION QUILTING – Report

I have been inspired by the STASH REPORTS I see on line every week by prolific quilters. I can not do a STASH REPORT because I am not making quilt tops / projects until I have finished the UFOs I already have. I will be posting progress reports … block by block til the quilts are done.

Since I have not sewn much this summer I thought I would evaluate what was stopping me and do something about it. First step was to go through my UFOs, make a list and decide what needs to be next on each one. To my surprise the majority of them need the part I love most …. the FMQing. So I am ranking the quilts in the matter of importance. I then will post each week … probably on SUNDAY night what I accomplished during the week. I will post pictures of the quilt as I go along. ( I already have some pictures of the quilt tops but not all of them.) Tonight’s post will just be the list as I am not planning to sew today as I have to babysit the munchkins.

I have collected a series of quilting motifs and FMQ books to use as my patterns for the various projects. I have also taken a number of classes and DVDs to help teach, inspire, keep me on track.

NURSE THROW …..
Gift for a nursing co worker with cancer. I want it finished before winter is here in MICHIGAN. … that means next week (month.)  If you note the dark spots that is a pre treatment with Dawn dish washing liquid as I am having trouble getting the ROXANNE CHALK marker off the quilt.   If this does not wash out completely I plan to put DAISY’s over the spots.  Daisies are a logo for a nurse’s award in our hospital.

SETH’S SUPER HERO QUILT …..
I only have a few blocks left to quilt then I can square up and bind.

SETH's QUILT

Timbo’s Quilt …..
This was a quilt I made using the pattern PIECE of PIE from a Craftsy Class. I had collected black and white fabrics ( some with a second color usually red.) Carol Wool also sent me a stack of 12 inch black and white fabrics. I figured out how to consistently cut the fabrics to obtain the blocks with the fabric I had. The blocks were squared up to the same size then assembled into the quilt top. I took the quilt top and had a friend just quilt the sashing. This was more expensive than basting but less expensive then what it would have to quilt the entire quilt. As the quilt is way to big        ( king ) for me to FMQ without a secure sandwich. I know other have done it but frankly I want this to be fun.

MY RETIREMENT NURSE QUILT ….
I had made this square in a square block I saw on THE QUILT SHOW demonstrated by KAREN HALLABY a couple of years ago. Since I had several panels of LORALIE nurses I cut them up, added coping strips then squared my focus blocks to the same size. I then used Karen Hallabe’s technique to make my square in a square blocks. When they were all the same size I assembled my quilt top. Once again I took it to a long armer and had the quilt sandwich stabilized, but this time she stitched in the ditch of the blocks. I had told her to just do the main blocks but she also did the big triangles. She said it stabilized the quilt better and allowed her to travel across the quilt top easier so there was no extra charge.

Gd Son's TIGERS Quilt

A quilt for my grandson’s bedroom at grand ma’s house.  NeeNee designed the quilt himself.  He told me he did not want to have the fabric cut up in small blocks. ( That  is what I had planned originally.)   He finally agreed, after a lot of discussion,  to having the panels split and arranged like this.  Okay by me a lot less work.   A friend is going to FMQ match stitch style on her long arm.

Cute tip from last night’s guild meeting …..

ANNE a guild member demo-ed what she called a RED DUDE.  The red dude is a small scrap of shelf liner which is used under a ruler so it becomes totally non slip.  YOU can use it for marking or cutting with a rotary cutter. I was amazed at how well even a small square works to stabilize the ruler. Small scrap even works with big rulers.  I was amazed at how cheap it was.  Every one got a scrap or two to take with them and there were still more scraps available.  I was also amazed I have never heard of or seen this tip before.

WICKED Cherry-wood Challenge .. Theme was the Broadway play WICKED. They had to use a collection called WICKED GREENS and black fabric to make their projects. Loved the individual quilts if I looked at them one at a time. Every-time I looked at the entire wall of the quilt collection on got queasy and nauseated…. Not a favorite display.

This was my favorite quilt in the NEW QUILT FROM AN OLD FAVORITE Challenge. I could not read who made it from my picture as the writing was blurred in the picture. The FMQ was exquisite and totally inspirational. She used multiple different background in the quilt. I wish I had better close ups of this quilt.. every section was different and inspirational.

JANET SHRUG’s first quilt ……

.
I met Janet Shrug at AQS Grand Rapids. She was a delightful lady from the south ( I think Tennessee or Kentucky or maybe one of the Carolina’s ) and came to the show because she had entered her first quilt into this show. She had made the quilt for her daughter and her daughter encouraged her to enter the quilt in the show. Janet designed each block based on the WIZARD OF OZ series of books. She said she went thru three machines making the quilt. After the first machine broke she borrowed her daughter’s machine and then later bought a second machine to get the quilt finished. ( I call that dedication.) When Janet got the notice that her quilt was in the show, she scheduled a vacation to come to Michigan to see her quilt displayed. Her excitement and enjoyment about being able talk about her quilt was contagious.

Janet said she taught her self quilting by reading “a”book and just kind of DOING IT. Each block presented it’s own challenge and she kind of improvised to make the blocks, trying out different techniques in each block. Janet also machine quilted each block. Her style has a definite rustic folk art style to it … very whimsical and young.

What most impressed me about her quilt was that it was so original. Not from someone else’s patterns. I do not think she copied illustrations from the books (I have the series and I took a look at the illustrations and Janet’s blocks seem to be original.) Her block although original are iconic. A person knows immediately the story just looking at the quilt.

More pictures from GRAND RAPIDS … AQS QUILT SHOW …

I have tried to post an eclectic mix of pictures from the show. I took over 300 pictures on each day. First day I concentrated on pictures of entire quilt. On the second day I concentrated on the quilting and got mostly close up pictures. There was a great mix of quilt styles. Hand quilted about 25 to 30 quilts. Modern Quilt about 20- 30 quilts. Traditional style quilts another 30-40 quilts. There was a large display of GUILD quilt challenges. The rules were decided upon by the guild and members made quilts following that particular theme. There were about 100 quilts mostly art style wall hangings. AQS also had several special exhibits : WICKED, Cherry-wood Challenge, Quilt like an Egyptian, Animals we Love, ULTIMATE Guild Challenge, Teacher’s display, AQS Authors’ Showcase, Quilts from the Museum, New Quilts from Old Favorites Challenge, SAQA WIDE HORIZON ART QUILTS, Living Color, and my favorite RED, WHITE and Quilted ( A display of antique quilts and counterpart contemporary reproductions of the antiques.)

I am thinking they had about 400 quilts at this show. It was not the biggest show but they did have a good mix. I will be going to it next year and I plan to take classes.

I went to AQS Grand Rapids Quilt Show

I am going to keep the written portion of this blog short … then I have a ton of pictures to post.  I am posting picture of close up of the quilts because I  did a study of the FREE MOTION  (FMQ) QUILTING exhibited at the show.   FMQ has been my main study for the past two years .. I want to be proficient by the time I retire because I have a large number of quilt tops that need to be quilted.  I was paying particular attention to the FMQ motifs and how they affected the quilt top.

At the show there were section of quilts designated as quilted on domestic machines and other sections designated as long arm quilted.  I was surprised at the large number of quilts on display that were hand quilted.   I also noted that many of the quilts on display were more MODERN in ascetic then the previous quilt shows I have been to.  There were art and traditional quilts to be seen but modern quilts are definitely an increased presence at this show.

There were several special exhibits: WICKED, Cherry-wood Challenge, Quilt like an Egyptian, Animals we Love, ULTIMATE Guild Challenge,  Teacher’s display, AQS Authors’ Showcase,  Quilts from the Museum,  New Quilts from Old Favorites Challenge,  SAQA WIDE HORIZON ART QUILTS, Living Color, and my favorite RED, WHITE and Quilted ( A display of antique quilts and counterpart contemporary reproductions of the antiques.)  I will post pictures in future blogs.

I am also considering posting a blog about what I have surmised about which quilts are selected for JURIED / REGIONAL shows.  I may be “all wet ” with my opinion about what quilts are selected but after attending quilt shows local and major for the past 10 years I have developed some observations that might be of value.

I took over 45o pictures … I tried to keep all the particulars with each picture but some of the names and numbers were not recorded. In part because I concentrated on FMQ and not always on the entire quilt. I also had photographed the quilts on two different days with two different cameras … so information got lost in the process. If I know the information I will post it. But enough talk… on with the pictures.
