Davison Evening Star Quilt Guild’s 2012 Raffle Quilt

Information on how to buy tickets for the quilt is at the above link and blog, but here is MY PICTURE to tempt you.  The photo has been edited just to remove the distracting background.  No I did not work on the quilt as my work schedule does not allow me to work on group projects.  This is a lovely quilt.

Happy Quilting,

Nonnie

Saturday cleaned my sewing area…. Sunday played hooky !!!

I was a good girl on Saturday and cleaned up the sewing area, reorganizing tools and notions.  If you knew me well, YOU would know this was a rarity as I can work in a bomb blast.  I kind of had to clean because I could not find my case of bobbins.  It took a couple of hours but they were found… YOU would never guess where!   Where they belonged … in the thread box.  Once I finished cleaning I did some FREE MOTION QUILTING.   I plugged in DVDs of FREE MOTION QUILTING by Patsy Thompson and away I went.  Worked for four hours… Pictures to be posted at a later date.   Well that was my Saturday.

On Sunday I played hookey!  Here is the photographic evidence of my field trip.

I spent the afternoon at the University of Michigan Natural History Museum with my daughter and grandson. He was so excited to see real dinosaur bones. He fluctuated from excited to scared. He could not decide if he liked them or if they would come alive to eat him

Playing with EQ 7 to design a border for a quilt —

I saw this border on Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/pin/74731675037465272/ … BORDER ON PINTEREST )   I am including the link to the PINTEREST picture because I do not think it is KOSHER to lift a picture without posting the link and I have not followed the links back to the original blog. I have seen similar borders and want it for a quilt I am working on. I am going to test it out on a baby quilt and it works use it on a bigger project.

I kind of changed the block to a rectangular shape. ( FINISHED: 7 inches WIDE by 4 inches block.) The sewing of the block is easy but what I found hard was to balance are the colors to form the pattern. The placement of the light, medium and dark fabrics. All the colors blend into each other. If the light (medium or dark) fabric goes the wrong place it throws the pattern off. I thought I could use a simple fast sewing technique (similar to sewing half square triangles.) but the colors often end up in the wrong placement. The blocks for THIS pattern have to be balanced and in the same / correct placement in order to form the X-pattern. Getting the placement of the colors was the hardest part as I wanted it to blend into each other in what my daughter called R.O.Y.G.B.V…. rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Each block’s colors will depend upon the next blocks color. My design wall will be used to plan the color placement.

Here is my first attempt at the designing the block. I used mono-chromatic color placement. I also tested gray-scale to test my placement.

I later tried making a scrappy border in E.Q. I am still trying to get my scraps to behave nicely with each other. Each time I make a leaf I try to put aside fabric to make the border. Sometimes, I do not have the right color for the blending process but I think by the time the quilt is finished it will be worked out.

Happy quilting to all,
Nonnie

4th of July in the Heat

Hope everyone is having a good FOURTH OF JULY. I am enjoying a day off of work. Went to the Hadley Children’s Parade to see my grandson ride is decorated bike. DID NOT see him in the parade because somebody decided to change the parade route ( without telling anyone or posting it ) I was on the wrong street. I did see him afterwards and got this picture among a few others.

Nee Nee on the Fourth of July, 2012

After the children’s parade I went home to get out of the sweltering heat. I was already 85 degrees at 10:30 am and very humid. My DD and grandson were going to a picnic, BBQ and swimming at a friend’s home. I went home and BBQ chicken for hubby and me. While it grilled I worked on blocks for my husband’s quilt. This block was made from scraps from a failed UFO project. The patches are all cut and just going to waste since I will never finish the original project… It was so UGLY. How could ruin such pretty fabric. Colors were wrong, scale was wrong, no contrast. All the left over fabrics are going into this project for my husband. I love using the unused patches in this project, I am loving the fabrics again.

I did have a misadventure with my piecing, even though I had the patches all lined up on my mini-design wall. ( My mini design wall was made from some left over ceiling tiles covered with flannel. I have several of these mini design walls as they make it easier to move with un-sewn patches. I do not know how I got my patches out of order. I am posting pictures of my boo boo and the finished block.

So far none of the patches have come out to the same size. Since I am designing the blocks as I go I have not had the measurements figured out. I now have a more standardized measurements and pattern so future blocks should be a consistent size.

NEW BLOG site for NONNIE’S QUILTING DREAMS…

As you know I have been having issues with WORD PRESS. I format my pages one way but WORD PRESS displays it entirely differently. I am now testing BLOGGER. I plan to post blogs in response to other bloggers I.E. Sandy’s color blogs and other blogs that request links. As with any blog hosting sites, BLOGGER has steep learning curve and will take a while to figure out if it works for me. One thing I did not like was that even though I have a G-mail I could not use my NONNIE QUILTING DREAMS as a blog name. Every name I submitted got rejected… so that is why I have a funky blog name and address.

I plan to keep the Word Press blog for more personal blogs, my quilt journal and what ever else is on my mind.
